STRONG MUSEUM OF PLAY REDESIGN

Graphic Design • Branding • Typography • Animation

The objective was to create a visual identity system for an existing museum’s brand by reimagining its logo and design assets. Through examining and researching their core values, I chose to redesign the Strong Museum of Play, a museum I visited many times as a child in Rochester, New York.

RESEARCH

Initially based on the founder’s personal collection and established in 1969, the Strong Museum of Play’s mission is to study and explore play. The core values of the Strong Museum are learning, nurturing creativity, and discovery. Visitors learn about toys and games throughout history in various exhibits.
The museum also has play areas, parks, and a carousel that allows people of all ages to nurture their creativity. Ropes courses, an arcade, and a butterfly garden are where kids can discover and encounter new things. Through play, the Strong Museum transforms the lives of people of all ages.

DIGITAL ITERATION

From the digital sketches, the focus was making the word “Strong” more readable and further emphasizing a building block shape language.

FINAL LOGO

MUSEUM TOUCHPOINTS

The second half of this project was to expand the visual brand identity. The customer interaction touchpoints that fit the Strong Museum of Play’s vision
were merchandise, a brochure, a social media page, and an animation.

MERCHANDISE

Adult and Children’s Shirts, Tote Bag, and Button Pins

Museum goers leave their trip with merchandise by which to remember it.
This touchpoint communicates to both children and adults through different designs.

BROCHURE

Communicates to the adults who visit the Strong Museum, who would use the brochure to learn about new exhibits or understand the brand’s values.

Helps promote and be informative in a fun, visual way.

SoCial Media PAGE

This digital asset helps the company promote new exhibits and events. It communicates to parents, adults, and teenagers. It highlights new experiences at the museum in an exciting format to encourage them to come visit.

ANIMATION

A billboard advertisement viewable from the outside of the building to draw attention to the bright and bold moving images. This animation could also be leveraged on their social media page.
