MangaPeach APP

Interaction Design • UX/UI • App Design Research • Branding

The objective of this project was to create a mobile application that fills a specific need or niche. With this, I remembered one of my constant struggles when adding to my physical manga collection: I can never remember all of the volumes I have.

My solution to this is “MangaPeach”, a collection guide app for people who collect manga, and a way for people to keep track of which series and volumes they have.

Research

Spurred by the success of anime streaming on services such as Crunchyroll and Hulu, manga sales in the U.S. have quadrupled since 2020. With this comes many new anime watchers and possible manga collectors. In manga collection communities, there isn’t a universal manga tracking app; instead, most people use Excel or smaller, less accessible apps.

These forms lack a clear flow that makes it easy for a user
to input information, and this process seems more like a chore rather than a fun way to keep track of their collections.

BENCHMARKING

Goodreads: Noted how it allows users to scroll side to side to see different books.

Pokémon TCGP: Inspired by how the collection page looks, and incorporated some of the stylization in my style tiles.

Airbuds: Took UI as inspiration for the friends page, as well as how users react to other people’s activity with emojis.

Manga-reading Websites: Inspired by the layouts of the search results page.

PERSONAS

USER FLOWS

In the final task flow, Vivi and Reese’s user flows are merged to make the app more streamlined. There is an “adding to collection” aspect, an “adding to wishlist” aspect,
and a social aspect, where others can react to what their friends are currently collecting.

PAPER PROTOTYPES

Revisited some of the websites and apps that were benchmarked,
mainly Goodreads and Airbuds. At this step, the focus was on creating the flow so that it made sense to a tester.

DIGITAL WIREFRAMES

Feedback from the paper prototypes included changing the search results page so that it would be easier to tell what users were seeing.
This was done by benchmarking multiple manga-reading websites
and incorporating their UI into the search results page. Overall, the stylization needed to be more consistent.
